Folate helps in producing healthy Sperm

Men who have low levels of folic acid have increased risk of having unhealthy sperm. Sperm in these men can show abnormalities in chromosomal number which can cause genetic abnormalities and syndromes. Researchers conducted analysis on 89 healthy, non-smoking men to know the relation between sperm quality and vitamin levels. This sexual health research was done by scientists of University of California.

Normally, 4% of sperm have chromosomal abnormalities but increase in folic acid intake reduces these abnormalities (Aneuploidy) and improves sperm quality. Vegetarians who eat folic acid rich foods like green leafy vegetables and fresh fruits will have more chance of having healthy sperm than non-vegetarians.

Daily recommended intake of folate for women is 400 µg. But it is good for adult men to take 700- 1000 µg of folic acid to increase sperm quality. Folic acid may not help in increasing sperm count but helps in raising sperm quality. Scientists are recommending daily intake of multivitamin tablets for men. Men should take foods rich in folic acid like green leafy vegetables and fresh fruits.
Folic acid intake is recommended for pregnant women as it is essential for healthy foetal development and to prevent neural tube birth defects. Women of child bearing age should take folic acid to maintain optimal levels.

We may call folic acid as “Reproductive vitamin” as it is playing crucial role in maintaining reproductive health of males and females.
These research results were published in the journal “Human Reproduction”.
